Vertical Farming
With increasing rates of urbanization comes the challenge of feeding the ever-increasing population in cities. Imported food products are no longer a sustainable solution due to the large carbon footprint created by intensive rural farming and global transportation (Virtanen et al., 2011). Thus, urban areas are now growing and consuming local food through urban agricultural system including vertical farming. Vertical farming produces crops in a controlled indoor environment using hydroponic nutrient delivery systems which providing greater yields per square foot compared to conventional agriculture (McCartney, 2015).
